CELL FUNCTIONS

?
NUCLEUS =
Contains genetic material, which controls the activities of the cell
1 of 16
CYTOPLASM =
Most chemical processes take place here, controlled by enzymes
2 of 16
CELL MEMBRANE =
Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
3 of 16
MITOCHONDRIA =
Most energy is released by respiration here
4 of 16
RIBOSOMES =
Protein synthesis happens here
5 of 16
CELL WALL =
Strengthens the cell
6 of 16
PERMANENT VACUOLE =
Filled with cell sap to help keep the cell turgid
7 of 16
CHLOROPLASTS =
Contain chlorophyll, which absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
8 of 16
What does the plant cell have that the animal cell does not? List three.
CELL WALL, PERMANENT VACUOLE, CHLOROPLASTS
9 of 16
What is a bacteria cell?
A bacterium is a single-celled organism. A bacterial cell has a different structure to an animal or plant cell.
10 of 16
Why is a bacterium cell different?
It has cytoplasm, a membrane and a surrounding cell wall, but the genetic material in a bacterial cell is not in a distinct nucleus.
11 of 16
What is a yeast cell?
Yeast is a single-celled organism.
12 of 16
What are the similarities of a yeast cell and a bacteria cell?
Like bacterial cells, yeast cells have cytoplasm and a membrane surrounded by a cell wall.
13 of 16
How is a yeast cell different to a bacteria cell?
Yeast cells have a nucleus
14 of 16
How does diffusion apply to cells?
Dissolved substances have to pass through the cell membrane to get into or out of a cell. Diffusion is one of the processes that allows this to happen.
15 of 16
When does diffusion occur?
Diffusion occurs when particles spread. They move from a region where they are in high concentration to a region where they are in low concentration. Diffusion happens when the particles are free to move.
