Cell Division

?
What does the cell of a nucleus contain?
The nucleus of a cell contains chromosomes made of DNA molecules. Each chromosome carries a large number of genes.

How are chromosomes found in body cells?
In pairs
2 of 20
What is the name for cell division?
Cell cycle
3 of 20
What does the cell cycle do?
Makes new cells for growth, development and repair by making body cells in multicellular organisms divide.
4 of 20
What is mitosis?
When the cell divides
5 of 20
What is the 1st stage of the cell cycle?
In a cell thats not dividing, the DNA is spread out in long strings.
6 of 20
What is the 2nd stage of the cell cycle?
The cell grows and increases the amount of sub cellular structures. e.g. mitochondria and ribosomes.
7 of 20
What is the 3rd stage of the cell cycle?
Then it duplicates it's DNA- one copy for each new cell. The DNA is copied and forms duplicates X-shaped chromosomes.
8 of 20
What is the 4th stage of the cell cycle?
Mitosis. the chromosomes line up and the cell fibres pull them apart. The two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell.
9 of 20
What is the 5th stage of the cell cycle?
Membranes form around each of the sets of chromosomes. These become the nuclei of the two new cells- the nucleus had divided.
10 of 20
What is the 6th stage of the cell cycle?
The cytoplasm and cell membrane divide
11 of 20
What is produced after mitosis?
Two new daughter cells. containing the exact same DNA- they're identical. Their DNA is also identical to the parent cell.

What is a stem cell?
A stem cell is an undifferentiated cell of an organism which is capable of giving rise to many more cells of the same type, and from which certain other cells can arise from differentiation.
13 of 20
What can stem cells from human embryos do?
Stem cells from human embryos can be cloned and made to differentiate into most different types of human cells.
14 of 20
What can stem cells from adult bone marrow do?
Stem cells from adult bone marrow can form many types of cells including blood cells.
15 of 20
What can Meristem tissue in plants do?
Meristem tissue in plants can differentiate into any type of plant cell, throughout the life of the plant.
16 of 20
What conditions can stem cells help?
Treatment with stem cells may be able to help conditions such as diabetes and paralysis.
17 of 20
What takes place in therapeutic cloning?
In therapeutic cloning an embryo is produced with the same genes as the patient. Stem cells from the embryo are not rejected by the patient’s body so they may be used for medical treatment.
18 of 20
Cons of stem cells?
The use of stem cells has potential risks such as transfer of viral infection, and some people have ethical or religious objections.
19 of 20
Pros of stem cells from meristems in plants.
Stem cells from meristems in plants can be used to produce clones of plants quickly and economically. • Rare species can be cloned to protect from extinction. • Crop plants with special features such as disease resistance can be cloned to produce lar
