Ionic Bonding
Metal and non metal
positive ion - negative ion
cations-anions
gives away electrons - takes electrons
1 of 5
Metallic Bonding
Metals only
Giant lattice of positive ions
All metals want to give away electrons so electrons go into gaps and form a sea of delocalised electrons
2 of 5
Metallic Bonding
Properties
High melting point: Lots of strong metallic bonds so needs lots of energy to break
Conducts electricity: Delocalised electrons can flow throughout the whole structure.
Malleable: layers of positive ions can slide when hammered.
3 of 5
Alloys
Mix of metals
No layers so stronger
Ions different sizes, this distorts the layers so they no longer slide - making them stronger.
4 of 5
Covalent bonding
Non metals only
Share electrons
