Biology Unit one - Food tests

HideShow resource information
Reducing sugars
Benedict's test - add benedict's solution and heat, if a reducing sugar is present the solution will turn brick red.
1 of 5
Starch
Iodine test - add iodine dissolved in potassium iodine solution to the sample. If starch is present it will turn from brown-orange to a dark blue-black colour.
2 of 5
Non-reducing sugars
Benedict's test again - new sample of test solution boiled with dilute hydrochlolic acid. Neutralise by adding sodium hydrocarbonate, then carry out Benedict's test for reducing suagrs.
3 of 5
Proteins
Biuret test - add a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution to make solution alkaline, then add copper sulphate solution. If protein is present, the solution will turn purple, if not, it will stay blue.
