Biology Unit 2 Classification

?
Animalia
A kingdom of life, consisting of multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotic organisms with a nervous and muscular system
1 of 17
Archaea
A domain of life consisting of prokaryotic unicellular organisms. Sometimes called archaebacteria
2 of 17
Autotroph
and organism that manufactures its own complex organic compounds from inorganic chemicals. All plants are autotroph
3 of 17
Binomial name
the formal name given to every species, containing two parts; the genus name followed by the species name. the species name is never used by itself.
4 of 17
Biological species concept
a definition of a species as a collection of individuals that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
5 of 17
Chitin
a polysaccharide that forms the cell walls of fungi, as well as the exoskeleton of arthropods
6 of 17
Chordata
A phylum of the kingdom animalia that all show a basic spinal structure called a notochord during at least part of their development. Those that go on to develop full spinal columns and vertebrates
7 of 17
Class
The taxonomical group between order and phylum. E.g. Mammalia (mammals) and Insecta (insects)
8 of 17
Classification
The practice of grouping species into taxa of various sizes on the basis of shared features
9 of 17
Dichotomous key
A branching sequence of statements, with two options at each stage, designed for the systematic identification of one of a finite set of species
10 of 17
domain
the highest taxonomical group. There are usually considered to be three domains - Archaebacteria or Archaea, Eubacteria or bacteria and Eukarya
11 of 17
Eubacteria
Another name for the domain of life consisting of bacteria: simple, unicellular prokaryotic micro-organisms
12 of 17
Eukarya
A domain of life consisting or animals, plants fungi and protists. Unlike prokaryotes, eukaryotes contain DNA in a membrane-bound nucleus
13 of 17
Family
A low level toxonomical group, between order and genus. e.g. Canidae (dogs, wolves, foxes, coyotes, jackals and dingos) and apidae (bee)
14 of 17
Fruiting body
the sexual phase of the life-cycle of fungi, such as mushrooms, and usually the most visible part of fungus
15 of 17
Fungi
A kingdom of life, consisting of multicellular heterotrophic eukaryotic organisms with a chitin cell wall and which reproduces via spores
16 of 17
Genus
The second lowest taxonomical group, between family and species. E.g. Canis (dongs, wolves, coyotes, and jackals) and Bombus (Bumblebees)
