What is an adaptation?
A change in the body that fits the habitat/environment.
1 of 15
What are the two types?
Biotic and abiotic
2 of 15
What do plants compete for?
Light, water,nutrients and space.
3 of 15
What do animals compete for?
Food, mates territory and water.
4 of 15
What do microbes compete for?
Hosts, nutrients and space.
5 of 15
What are typical adaptations for cold climates?
White fur for camouflage, big feet to distribute body weight, thick fur reduces air movement. Prevents heat loss through convection. Traps a layer of warm air. Body fat (Adipose tissue in humans)
6 of 15
What are adaptations in hot climates?
Camouflage. Less fat. Big ears means small SA:V ratio. Thin fur. Bushy tail for extra warmth. Again, small paws and long legs for small SA:V ratio.
7 of 15
What is an extremeophile?
Animal added to extreme conditions. E.g. high salt levels or high pressure.
8 of 15
What are some plant adaptations?
Succulents storer water in stems. No leaves to reduce SA. Long root systems to absorb water. Spikes to stop animals eating them. Hair to help shade the plant and reduce water lost.
9 of 15
How do plants and animals reduce the risk of being eaten by predators?
Camouflage. Warning colours. Spikes. Long legs. Large ears. Bad taste of poison.
10 of 15
What is distribution?
How the species is spread out.
11 of 15
What are factors that affect distribution in plants?
Water, light, nutrients and for animals: mates, food, and predators.
12 of 15
What are some factors that affect distribution?
Shortage of food and water, lack of space, rainfall, poachers, invasive species.
13 of 15
Lichens?
Can measure air pollution. Different types indicate different amounts of air pollution.
14 of 15
How can environmental changes be measured?
By oxygen, rainfall and light levels.
