Biology - Cells

?
What are Eukaryotic cells?
- Possesses a clearly defined nucleus that has a nuclear membrane that surrounds it. Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells.
1 of 17
What are Prokaryotic cells?
- Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler. Typically unicellular microorganisms that lack a distinct nucleus and membrane bound organelles.
2 of 17
What are sub cellular structures?
The different parts of a cell.
3 of 17
What is the function of the nucleus?
It contains the genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
4 of 17
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is a gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes that control the chemical reactions.
5 of 17
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
6 of 17
What is the function of the mitochondria?
These are where most of the reactions for respiration take place.
7 of 17
What is the function of the ribosomes?
These are involved in translation of genetic material in the synthesis of proteins
8 of 17
What are the subcellular structures of an animal cell?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Mitochondria, Ribosomes
9 of 17
What is the function of the cell wall?
It is made of cellulose and it supports the cell and strengthens it.
10 of 17
What is the function of the large vacuole?
It contains cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salts. It maintains the internal pressure to support the cell.
11 of 17
What is the function of the chloroplasts?
These are where photosynthesis occurs, which makes food for the plant. They contain a green substance called chlorophyll.
12 of 17
What are the subcellular structures of a plant cell?
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell membrane, Mitochondria, Ribosomes, Cell wall, Large vacuole, Chloroplasts
13 of 17
What are the subcellular structures of a bacterial cell?
Chromosomal DNA, Cell membrane, Ribosomes, Plasmid DNA, Flagellum
14 of 17
What is the function of Chromosomal DNA?
It controls the cells activities and replication. It floats free in the cytoplasm.
15 of 17
What is the function of Plasmid DNA?
Small loops of extra DNA that aren’t part of the chromosome. Plasmids contain genes for things like drug resistance and can be passed between bacteria.
16 of 17
What is the function of the flagellum?
It is a long hair-like structure that rotates to make the bacterium move. It can be used to move the bacteria away from harmful substances like toxins and towards beneficial things like nutrients or oxygen.
