Draw a simple diagram of the leaf
search up image :)
1 of 24
What is a leaf literally?
an organ
2 of 24
What is the main purpose of the epidermis?
to protect the surface of the leaf
3 of 24
What is an adaptation of the upper epidermis?
it is transparent to allow light to pass through to the photosynthetic cells in the palisade layer
4 of 24
What is the upper epidermis covered with?
an oily material called the waxy cuticle
5 of 24
What is the purpose of the waxy cuticle?(2)
prevents water loss by evaporation
it also prevents the leaf from drying out
6 of 24
What does the lower epidermis contain?
tiny pores called stomata
7 of 24
What does the stomata allow?
allows oxygen to leave and carbon dioxide to enter the leaf
8 of 24
What do we find on either side of the stomata?
guard cells
9 of 24
What is the purpose of the guard cells?
they are light sensitive
open-day
10 of 24
Why are the guard cells closed at night?
as no photosynthesis is taking place
11 of 24
What does the palisade mesophyll consist of?
palisade cells
12 of 24
What are palisade cells packed full of?
chloroplasts
13 of 24
What takes place in the palisade mesophyll?
most photosynthesis
14 of 24
What is the spongy mesophyll full of?
air spaces
15 of 24
Why does the spongy mesophyll have air spaces?
to allow the easy diffusion path for carbon dioxide and oxygen
16 of 24
What is the role of the xylem?
it transports water from the roots to the stem and leaves
17 of 24
The xylem may also transport dissolved?
mineral ions
18 of 24
For example?
magnesium
19 of 24
What is magnesium used to make?
chlorophyll
20 of 24
What does the phloem transport?
dissolved sugar produced from photosynthesis from the leaves to the rest of the plant
21 of 24
What is the movement of sugars and other molecules through the phloem called?
translocation
22 of 24
Where is meristem tissue found?
examples?
at the growing tips of plants
e.g. shoots and roots
23 of 24
What do meristem tissues contain?
stem cells
