Explain a method of quantifying energy content (EC) in food
Use calorimeter or simple experimental design to measure EC by combustion of the food. 1. Measure initial mass/ V of O2 & temp of O2. 2. Measure mass of food. 3. Ignite food & place under test tube w/ O2. 4. Measure final water temp & mass
1 of 7
What is the equation for measuring energy content in food?
EC in food (Jg^-1)= (temp rise x water volume x 4.2J (specific heat capacity of water)) / mass of food.
2 of 7
Define calorie
1 calorie= the amount of energy that will raise the temp of 1g of water by 1 degree C.
3 of 7
What is the meaning of 'systolic pressure'?
It describes the force of blood on the arteries. The phase of blood circulation in which the ventricles are actively pumping. This is the highest measure of pressure.
4 of 7
What is the meaning of 'diastolic pressure'?
It describes the force of blood on the arteries. The phase of blood circulation in which the ventricles are being filled with blood & are relaxed. This is the lowest measure of pressure.
5 of 7
What are features of cardiac muscle?
Have junctions between cells called intercalated discs . BRANCHED cells & these cytoplasmic connections that allow the movement of ions & therefore the rapid conductions of electric signals from one cell to the next, stimulating contractions.
6 of 7
What is a sarcomere?
The basic unit within a muscle cell (only in some types of muscle tissue). Can be seen in muscle electron micrographs.
