Biological Explanation of Aggression

?
Limbic System
A circuit of structures in the brain which deals with emotion and motivation, realted to aggression.
1 of 10
Amygdala
Stimulation leads to rage and aggression, seen in psychopaths. Sends input to the Prefrontal Cortex.
2 of 10
Prefrontal Cortex
Tries to regulate the information that the Amygdala sends and differentiates between good and bad behaviour, consequences, controlling urges.
3 of 10
Aggression is caused by...
Amygdala is overstimulated, so feel constantly aggressive. Prefrontal Cortex doesnt control the stimulation of the Amygdala well.
4 of 10
Neurotransmitters in the brain cause aggression.
Allow impulses to be sent around the brain, including Serotonin and Dopamine.
5 of 10
Low levels of Serotonin
It inhibits aggressive responses. Particularly in the Prefrontal Cortex, people are unable to control their impulses and aggressive responses.
6 of 10
High levels of Dopamine
Amphetamines increase the amount of Dopamine in the brain, associated to be aggressive.
7 of 10
Hormonal mechanisms of the endorcrine system release hormones that increase aggression.
The hormone Testosterone is produced in the testes of men and both men and women convert DHEA which is produced in the adrenal glands into testosterone. It produces "male behaviours".
8 of 10
Early exposure to Testosterone.
Organises the neural networks invloved in aggression which are then activated from further exposure. Then less testosterone is needed later to stimulate aggression.
9 of 10
Ethical Reasons
Research has focussed on examinig the levels of teststerone shown by aggressive people and found it is correlational. It makes people more likley to engage in aggressive acts.
