What does the diaphram seperate the lungs from?
The abdomen.

Stages to breathing in: (6)
Intercostal muscles contract, ribs move up and out, diaphragm contracts and flattens, volume of chest increases, pressure in chest decreases and air is drawn in.

Intercostal muscles relax, ribs move down and in, diaphragm relaxes and moves up, volume of chest decreases, pressure inside the chest increases and air is forced out the lungs.
