B2.2

?
What is the process for photosynthesis?
CO2 taken in by leaves + water taken up roots __ chorophyll traps light energy__--> glucose(some stored as insoluble starch) + oxygen.
1 of 10
How can you test leaves for starch and how do the result differ for variegated leaves?
Iodine solution. Only the green patches on variegated leaves (white and green) will turn blue-black.
2 of 10
What is a limiting factor (give examples)?
Lack of light, cold temp (less effective enzymes and low CO2 levels (i.e. in an enclosed space) are all limiting factors as they put a cap on the rate of photsynthesis.
3 of 10
What are the independent and dependent variables (also e.g of controlled variables)?
The independent variable os the one being tested while the dependent variable is the one you measure. Variables that need to be controlled are light, temp, an plant type.
4 of 10
What are the uses of glucose produced by photosynthesis?
It may be: stored as insoluble starch or fats and oils, used to produce proteins, used to produce cellulose to strengthen cell walls or used for respiration.
5 of 10
Why do plant and algae cells need a supply of minerals such as nitrate ions and where do they get it?
To produce protein. Plants absorb nitrate ions from the soil whilst algae absorb it from the water.
6 of 10
Name 6 physical factors that may affect the distribution of organisms.
Temperature + Availability of nutrients, water, oxygen, CO2 and light.
7 of 10
How can plant growers try to five their plants the best conditions for growth?
Greenhouses + Poly tunnels constructed to grow plants in an enclose space, they may add heaters, lamps, nitrate ions to the soil + CO2 to the air. As this is costly, the grower may compare the biomass of plants grown indoors + outdoors.
8 of 10
How can you obtain quantative data (distribution of organisms within their habitats) using a quadrat?
Random quantative sampling (consider sample size so that the sample size is representative of whole habitat/field) or along a transect (A line marked between two points i.e.every 5m).
9 of 10
How can you make sure an investigation about the distribution of organisms in their environment is valid?
Only the independent variable should affect the results, all other variables must be controlled.
