Define Precision
Values that have very little spread around the mean value (though gives no indication of how close the results are to the true value)
1 of 32
Define Repeatability
The original experiment can be repeated using the same method and equipment and getting the same results
2 of 32
Define Reproducability
The experiment is repeated by another person, or using different equipment or techniques, and the same results are obtained
3 of 32
Define Resolution
The smallest change in the quantity being measured of a measuring instrument that gives a perceptible change in the reading
4 of 32
Define Accuracy
A measurement close to the true value
5 of 32
Define Random Error
Causes readings to be spread about the true value, due to results varying in an unpredictable way from one measurement to the next
6 of 32
Define Sytematic Error
Causes readings to differ from the true value by a consistent amount each time a measurement is made
7 of 32
Define Amplitude
The maximum disturbance of a wave from its undisturbed position
8 of 32
Define Frequency
The number of waves produced by a source each second
9 of 32
Define Wavelength
The distance between a point on one wave and the same point on the next wave (usually measured crest to crest)
10 of 32
Define Wave Speed
frequency x wavelength
11 of 32
Define Phase
(tbc)
12 of 32
Define Phase Difference
The distance between two waves at the same point
13 of 32
Define Path Difference
The difference (in meters) between the lengths of two paths of two waves
14 of 32
Define Coherence
A fixed relationship between the phase of waves in a beam of radiation of a single frequency. Two beams of light are coherent when the phase difference between their waves is constant
15 of 32
Define Scalar
A quantity with magnitude but no direction
16 of 32
Define Vector
A quantity with magnitude and direction
17 of 32
Define a Moment
The turning effect of a force around a pivot
18 of 32
Define Displacement
An overall change in an object's position
19 of 32
Define Speed
The rate at which an object covers a distance
20 of 32
Define Velocity
The rate at which the position of an object changes
21 of 32
Define Acceleration
The rate at which an object changes its velocity
22 of 32
Define Impulse
The change of momentum of an object when the object is acted upon by a force for an interval of time
23 of 32
Define Hooke's Law
The force needed to extend or compress a spring a distance is proportional to that distance
24 of 32
Define the Elastic Limit of a Material
The maximum extent to which a material may be stretched without permanent alteration of size or shape
25 of 32
Define Tensile Stress
The force per unit area applied to a material
26 of 32
Define Tensile Strain
The extension per unit length of a material
27 of 32
Define Elastic Strain Energy
Up to the elastic limit of a material, all the work done in stretching it as stored potential energy
28 of 32
Define Breaking Stress
The maximum stress a material can stand before it will break
29 of 32
Define Resistance
voltage/current
30 of 32
Define Terminal PD
The potential difference across a circuits terminals
31 of 32
Define EMF
A potential difference that can induce current in a circuit
32 of 32
