What is Behaviourism?
Behaviourists believe that all behaviour is acquired through learning and that we are all born as a 'blank slate'.

All behaviour is learned. Learning occurs through operant, classical and observational learning. And behaviourists believe that the laws of learning are universal.

Classical conditioning
Classical conditioning is learning by association. Suggests that we associate feelings/emotions with situations.

Operant Conditioning
Operant conditioning is learning by consequences. Reinforcers increase the likelihood that a behaviour will be repeated, whereas punishments decrease the likelihood that a behaviour will be repeated.

What are the three types of reinforcement?
rRositiveeinforcement, Negative reinforcement and Punishment.

Positive Reinforcement
Positive reinforcement is receiving a reward when a certain behaviour is performed.

Negative Reinforcement
Negative reinforcement occurs when an animal or human avoids something unpleasant.

Punishment
An unpleasant consequence of a behaviour, eg. being told off.

Continuous Schedules
Applying one of the 3 types of reinforcement every time the behaviour occurs.

Variable Schedules
When reinforcement is applied on a irregular basis.
