7. energy

?
What type of reactions can their energy released can be measured by tempuratu
Water + solids and neutralizing reactions (chemical)
1 of 10
Define exothermic reaction:
gives heat out to the environment - Bond forms, as the energy released from the the bond forming is more than the energy needed to break the bond
2 of 10
define endothermic reaction:
takes heat out of the environment - breaking bonds, as the energy needed to break the bond is more than the energy released when the bond is formed
3 of 10
What is calorimetry?
It shows that amount of energy in a fuel, this is done by burning the fuel for a over water for a certain change in temperature of water
4 of 10
What is the equation for the energy transferred?
Energy transferred (j) = Mass of water (g) X Specific heat capacity of water (4.2) X Change in temperature (oc)
5 of 10
What is the activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy that is needed for the reaction to start
6 of 10
What is the effect of the catalyst?
It lowers the activation energy levels, but it doesn't affect the amount of product
7 of 10
What is a combustion engine?
Hydrogen gas and oxygen burn to make a fuel for the engine and the only bi-product is water
8 of 10
What is a fuel cell?
It's an electrical cell that is supplied with a fuel and oxygen and uses energy from the reaction between them to generate electricity
9 of 10
What are the pro's and con's of fuel cells?
Pro's - there is no water and it mean's cities are less dependent on crude oil/ con's - hydrogen takes up a lot of space and it is hard to hold as it is explosive and it takes electricity to gain from the hydrocarbon
