Britain-ruled an empir of over one quarter of the worlds people. they had a strong navy to protect itself and its colonies from invasions. followed a policy of 'splendid isolation'(it didnt get invloved in european politics)

France- they were bitter about losing Alsace and Lorraine to Germany in the franco-prussian war in 1871.
