There are 2 main types of topologies(formation of a local area network) that are listed in the spec: star and bus.

A star topology consists of a server or switch which each node is connected to individually. This means that each node is inderpendent of each other. Therefore, if one node fails, the rest are uneffected. In addition, there are no collisions with data as each node is connected via a different cable.
