by early 1945 it was clear that Germany would be defeated, the minds of the allies turned to what peace would bring, to discuss these matters they met at Yalta and Potsdam

    • how to bring the war with japan to a steady end
    • how to create and maintain peace that would last

The yalta conference

At the Yalta conference, the allied leaders - Churchill, Roosevelt and Stalin got on well together despite their differences (capitilism and communism)...

  • germany would be divided into 4 zones and would be run by the USA, UK, Russia and France
  • germany's capital, Berlin would also be divided into 4 zones - but it was in the soviet zone
  • the countries of eastern Europe would be allowed to force free elections to decide how they are governed
  • the ussr would join the war against japan…
