The Night of the Long Knives - 

  • Even though Hitler had basically gained power with the Enabling Act, he was beginning to have doubts about the SA
  • The SA were growing in numbers and their leader, Ernst Rohm, could be a threat to Hitler's power
  • Hitler needed to win over the army and with Rhom leading the SA, he wasn't going to acheive that

  • The SA had fought for Hitler during the Munich Putsch in 1923
  • Ernst Rohm was personally loyal to Hitler
  • Leaders of the ** (such as Himmler) wanted to reduce the power of the SA to build their own
  • Ernst Rohm shared Hitlers vison of a racially pure society
  • the SA had been in existance since the early days of the Nazi Party
