- Even though Hitler had basically gained power with the Enabling Act, he was beginning to have doubts about the SA
- The SA were growing in numbers and their leader, Ernst Rohm, could be a threat to Hitler's power
- Hitler needed to win over the army and with Rhom leading the SA, he wasn't going to acheive that
Reasons for Hitler to support the SA -
- The SA had fought for Hitler during the Munich Putsch in 1923
- Ernst Rohm was personally loyal to Hitler
- Leaders of the ** (such as Himmler) wanted to reduce the power of the SA to build their own
- Ernst Rohm shared Hitlers vison of a racially pure society
