The famine (1932-33)
The 1932 and 1933 harvests were poor and failed to meet quotas, for example, the harvest of 1933 was 10 million tonnes less than that of 1926
- Activists sent from the cities did not have knowledge of farming methods
- There were not enough animals to pull ploughs as peasants had eaten or destroyed them
- The MTS did not provide enough tractors
- Peasants gained nothing from collective land and so refused to work hard on it
