The function of the endocrine system: glands and hormones

• The endocrine system works alongside the nervous system to control vital functions in the body
• It works more slowly than the nervous system but it is very widespread and has powerful effects
• It is made up of a series of glands throughout the body which release chemicals, known as hormones into the bloodstream. These chemicals target specific cells either in organs or throughout the body and produce powerful behavioural effects
