1. Mouth:
- Food is grinded into small pieces by teeth, which increases the food's surface area
- Salivary glands produce saliva, which makes the food moist and easier to swallow
- Food mixes with amylase, which is an enzyme released by the salivary glands
- Amylase breaks down starch into glucose
2. Oesophagus:
- Food is pushed down the oesophagus by contracting muscles
