Speech codes

Speech codes are patterns or ways of using language. Bernstein argues that the working class use only the context-bound restricted code. The type of speech usually includes short, grammatically unfinished sentences.

•This speech code limits their ability in understanding school life as this code is not used in the school environment. Also the restricted code is predictable which means sometimes only single words or gestures are used or short, grammatically simple sentences with limited vocabulary, which disadvantages the working-class children in the school life as it is not used in that environment.
