Seismic Waves

HideShow resource information

You can't drill very far into the crust of the Earth, so scientists use seimic waves casued by earthquakes to find out about the Earth's inner structure

Earthquakes casue different types of waves

  • Earthquakes produce seismic (shock) waves that travel on the surface and inside the Earth
  • Scientists record these seismic waves using instruments on the Earth's surface
  • They record the time it takes for them to reach different parts of the Earth
  • Scientists also note which
