• After 1871, Germany was united which gave scopefor the impressive industrial expansion of the state of Prussia, German tecnology especially in chemicals and steel rivalled andoutshone that of Britain
• German manufactureres were protected by tariffs (Britain weren't until 1932)
• Economic growth  in the USA after the civil war was immpressive, greater mechanisation eg. the combine harvester and growth of railways opened created more and cheaper food protected by tariffs and providing competition for British farmers
• "Second industrial revolution" other countries eg. Italy and Russia industrialising, demand for British products was falling, Japan modernised and emerged as a new rival in the far east
