To understand Yeats' poetry and concerns, we need to know a little about the world and culture that he lived in.

Through-out Irelands history, wars and rebellions, the struggle for 'home rule' for Ireland had dominated relationships between the two countries.  Home rule was once again promised before the outbreak of the Great War, although the break with Britain was opposaed by many in the north of the country, Ulster. Driven by religious and cultural differences, demanded that they remain part of the UK, thus dividing Ireland…
