PAVLOVS DOGS EXPERIMENT
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS) = Food
Unconditioned Response (UCR) = Salivation
Neutral Stimulus (NS) = Metranome
Conditioned Stimulus (CS) = Metranome
Conditioned Response (CR) = Salivation
UCS = UCR
food = salivation
UCS + NS = UCR
food + metranome = salivation
CS = CR
Metranome = salivation
Also, the Dog associated the food with the person feeding it, so salivated when saw the person because they thought they were getting food.
This is just like when the Dog paired the food with the metranome.
Controlled conditions
- Sound proof lab so there was no distractions
- No contact with the researcher feeding them
Just the metranome without the food made the dog salivate. Pavlov concluded that the dogs had been conditioned a new response to a new stimulus
Generalisability:
Transposition of findings from animal studies to humans will give concern as the two are very different. However, Pavlov worked on Dogs' (reflex) responses and thought that they clearly compared to human autonomic (reflex) responses.
Reliability
Standardised procedures, so they were replicable
- Same apparatus
- Dogs do the same thing
- Sound proof
- No contact
Consant results, as Pavlov continued to test and retest his hypothesis and got the same results.
Application
Pavlov had identified and tested a new way of learning.
It can be applied to us through things like Aversion therapy for Alcoholics (associating pain with what they desire).
UCS = UCR
ematic drug Vommitting
UCS + NS = UCR
ematic drug + Alcohol vommitting
CS = CR
alcohol vommitting
Furthermore, it explains the aquisation of phobias through classical conditioning principles and…
