P2 Physics - Forces

Acceleration

  • Acceleration is the capacity to gain speed
  • When an object moves in a straight line with a constant acceleration, you can calculate its acceleration if you know how much its velocity changes and how long this takes.
  • a = (v – u) ÷ t
  • acceleration = (velocity-starting velocity) ÷ time taken

Forces and Braking

  • When a vehicle travels at a steady speed the driving force from the engine is balanced by air resistance and other resistive forces
  • These are the forces that act on the car
    • Gravity
    • The reaction force
    • The driving force
    • Friction
    • Air resistance
  • The resultant force is the
