Rutherford and Marsden: The Nuclear Model Of an Atom:

• Fired a beam of alpha particles at thin gold foil.
• Most went through but the occasional one came straight back at them.
• Realised that most of the mass of the atom was centered at the nucleus. 
• Showed that most of an atom was empty space.
