Methodology
- review of research- meta-analysis- review of other studies- literature review
- used research methods such as correlations, interviews ,questionnaires & observations
- coorelations- finding which factors co-vary with hapiness- age gender,marriage and culture
- interviews & questionnaires- consider and report happiness- closed questions
- observations-report what ps were doing/feeling/thinking at selected times.- used a beeper to remind ps to complete.
Findings
- Myths of hapiness
- age- no diff- survey from around 17000 from 16 countries (ingelhart,1990)- no time of life is happier/unhappier than others
- gender-generally no diff- 80% of men and women said they were 'fairly satisfied' (ingelhart,1990)
- race- no real diff-people of diff nationalities scored similar on test of self-esteem.
- culture- large diff-nations differ in hapiness even when income is controlled-in portugal about 10%people say they are very happy wheras 40% in the netherlands
- money- moderate diff-75% of americans students starting college said being wery well of financially was a 'very important' life…
