AO1

Sensory register and attention: Places where information is held at each of the senses. The capacity of these registers is large. Constantly recieves information, most is not paid attention to so only stays in register for a few milliseconds. If attention is paid, the data transfers to the STM.

STM and maintenance rehearsal: Used for immediate tasks. Limited duration so if rehearsal isn't practised, the memory will decay. STM has a limited capacity so new information tends to displace old information. Eventually, rehearsal will make it an LTM.

LTM and retrieval: Unlimited capacity and duration. If you forget something then it was never a permament memory to begin with. The process of getting information from the LTM involves the info passing back through the STM so that it is avaliable for use.

Strength - research support - Controlled lab studies on coding, capacity and duration support that STM and LTM are separate stores. Brain scanning studies show there is a difference - Beardsley found the prefrontal cortex was active during STM but…
