Much Ado About Nothing Structure

Structure/Main Plots:

  • Has two interrelated plots that are structurally combined making the play a tragedy and comedy:
  1. Don John’s plan to disgrace Hero and prevent her marriage to Claudio.     (MAIN PLOT)
  2. The union between Beatrice and Benedick.                                                   (SUB PLOT)

Hero and Claudio: 

1.1 Claudio and Don Pedro return to Messina and Claudio confesses his love for Hero.

1.2 Leonato wrongly believes that Don Pedro will woo Hero for himself.

1.3 Don John’s first plot to dismay Claudio is hatched but based on a mistaken overhearing.

2.1 THE MASKED BALL: Don Pedro woos Hero on behalf of Claudio, then hand her over to him.

2.2 Don John’s second plot is formed when Borachio suggests the deceit.
