DNA and RNA
- DNA ia used to store genetic information
- RNA is used to transport genetic information
- They're both polymers of nucleotides
- Nucleotides have a pentose sugar, phosphate and nitrogen containing organic base
- Phosphodiester bonds form between phosphate groups and pentose sugars to create strands of nucleotides
- DNA has a deoxyribose sugar
- RNA has a ribose sugar and rather than thymine is has uracil
DNA replication
- DNA copies itself before cell division so that each new cell has full DNA. This is semi-conservative replication.
- DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between complementary bases, making two single strands
- Each original strand acts as a template…
