1. Colonization

o   Infectious microorganisms exist in reservoirs e.g. environment,  animals other infected humans

o   They are transmitted via direct contact, or indirectly by vectors – bites/stings or direct exposure faecal oral transmission through food/water or soil. 

o   Human-to-human transmission by aerosolized microorganisms in droplets – primary means of respiratory tract infections; physical contact.
