Background:

  • Early 16th Century: England was under the Catholic Church, followed the Pope in Rome
  • Same as hundreds of years before
  • Different religious beliefs = heretic, could be punished or executed for heresy

Henry VIII: 1509-1547

  • 1534: Pope refused his divorce
  • Split from the Catholic Church and became head of the Church in England
  • Anyone who refused to accept the split from Rome was executed
  • Used Protestant ideas to allow his divorce but was a Catholic at heart
