Background:
- Early 16th Century: England was under the Catholic Church, followed the Pope in Rome
- Same as hundreds of years before
- Different religious beliefs = heretic, could be punished or executed for heresy
Henry VIII: 1509-1547
- 1534: Pope refused his divorce
- Split from the Catholic Church and became head of the Church in England
- Anyone who refused to accept the split from Rome was executed
- Used Protestant ideas to allow his divorce but was a Catholic at heart
