FUNCTIONALIST THEORY OF RELIGION: THE SACRED AND PROFANE AND COLLECTIVE CONSCIENCE:

DURKHEIM: says that religion is not just a set of rituals but a fundamental distinction between the sacred and the profane. For example the sacred are things set apart, they create feelings of awe and wonder and they are things such as a christian cross.
