Form and Structure
SONNETS:
- 2 main types of sonnet - Eurpoean/Shakespearean and Petrarchan
- 14 lines and they rhyme in a particular pattern
- Shakespearean: 3 quatrains and 1 rhyming couplet ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
- Petrarchan: 1 octave plus 1 sestet ABABABAB CDE CDE, tends to have a change/shift after octave
RHYTHM:
- iambic pentameter
- 10 syllables
- organised into 5 pairs or iambs/feet
- emphasised/stressed - pairs have an unstressed syllabule followed by a stressed one
