Form and Structure

SONNETS:

  • 2 main types of sonnet - Eurpoean/Shakespearean and Petrarchan
  • 14 lines and they rhyme in a particular pattern
  • Shakespearean: 3 quatrains and 1 rhyming couplet ABAB CDCD EFEF GG
  • Petrarchan: 1 octave plus 1 sestet ABABABAB CDE CDE, tends to have a change/shift after octave

RHYTHM:

  • iambic pentameter
  • 10 syllables
  • organised into 5 pairs or iambs/feet
  • emphasised/stressed - pairs have an unstressed syllabule followed by a stressed one
