Interference Theory:

Interference has been proposed as an explanation for forgetting in LTM. Once information has reached LTM it is more - or - less permanent so any forgetting of LTMs is most likely because we can't get access to them even though they are available. Interference between memories makes it harder for us to locate them - this is know as forgetting. There are 2 types of interference;

Proactive Interference (PI) - occurs when an older memory interferes with a newer one. e.g. a teacher has learnerd so many names in the past they have difficulty remembering the names of their current class

Retroactive Interference (RI) - occurs when a newer memory interferes with an older one. e.g. a teacher has remembered so many names this year
