EVIDENCE OF PATRIARCHY

RELIGIOUS ORGANISATIONS - mainly male-dominated, despite the fact that women often participate more than men in these organisations. An example of this is that Orthodox, Judaism and Catholicism forbid women to obtain roles of preisthood, some dont allow women to speak in Church. 

PLACES OF WORSHIP - these often segregate the sexes and marginalise women, EG seating them behind screens while men occupy the central and more sacred places. In Islam women cannot pray infront of men due to prayer positions. 

  • Womens participation may be restricted EG they may not be allowed to preach or read from sacred texts
  • Taboos regard that menstruation, pregnancy and childbirth may also prevent participation EG in Islam menstuating women are forbidden to touch the Quran. HOLM (2001) regards this as the devaluation of women in religion

SACRED TEXTS - these largely feature the doings of male Gods, prophets etc, are usually written and interpreted by men. Stories often reflect anti-female stereotypes such as Eve, who in Genesis caused humanity's fall from grace and expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
