What are enzymes

  • To work well and quickly each reaction is controlled by a particular group of proteins called enzymes
  • A substance that helps a chemical reaction go faster without itself being changed by the reaction is called a catalyst
  • Without enzymes these reactions might still happen but at a too slow rate for the cells to do all they need to do to stay alive
  • Some enzymes help a large substance to break apart into smaller molecules, and other help smaller molecules join together to make larger ones

Enzymes inside cells

  • During DNA replication in mitosis or meiosis the DNA double helix is unwound and the hydrogen bonds are separated by one particular enzyme
  • As new bases line up along each half so the complementary base pairs
