What are enzymes
- To work well and quickly each reaction is controlled by a particular group of proteins called enzymes
- A substance that helps a chemical reaction go faster without itself being changed by the reaction is called a catalyst
- Without enzymes these reactions might still happen but at a too slow rate for the cells to do all they need to do to stay alive
- Some enzymes help a large substance to break apart into smaller molecules, and other help smaller molecules join together to make larger ones
Enzymes inside cells
- During DNA replication in mitosis or meiosis the DNA double helix is unwound and the hydrogen bonds are separated by one particular enzyme
