How does it work?  

1. Current is switched on and flows through an insulated wire.

2. The coil/core becomes magnetic.

3. The object is attracted to it.

4. Current is switched off.

5. The object falls.

The steel frame of the vehicle is attracted to the electromagnet when current is passed through the coil. The steel frame sticks to the electromagnet. When the current is switched off, the frame drops off the electromagnet.
