Electrolysis is the process by which ionic substances are split into their compounds when an electric current is passed through them.

For electrolysis to work the ionic compound must first be molten, or in solute. This is because the particles need to be free to move to the anode and cathode.

In electrolysis, you have the anode, the cathode, the electrolyte and the ionic compound:

    - The ionic compound is what is broken up

    - The Anode is a negatively charged electrode
