The short and long term effects of privation The immediate response to seperation- protest-despair-detachment Many children experience short term seperations from their attachment figures. These can be planned if let say the mother goes to the hospital for another baby. Research has focused on the seperation of mother and baby, but more recent research considers father and child seperations. Once the child has formed their first attachment at around 8-9months, they are likely to behave with the following behaviur pattern characterised by three stages (also know as PDD):

  • protest: Child screams and protests angrily when parents leave.
