Decline of the Liberal party by 1924

The 1924 election brought the pro DLG tories back into the mainstream and the Liberals lost heavily. Those voters concerned about socialism and the rise in power of the state voted conservative and those admired peaceful and progrssive foreign policy and domestic reform voted Labour. The 1924 ministry proved Labour was a credible party not just a pressure group or left wing debating society. As free trade disappeared as an issue so did the Liberals' main political idea. 

Long term factors causing the decline

.They didn't represent anyone's economic interests, trade unionists saw Labour a their party and those with business, industrial and financial interests didn't believe the party would defend them against socialism and state control
