How does fractional distillation work?

  • when crude oil is heated at around 400 degrees, most of it boild and vaporises.
  • Vapours consisting of hydrocarbons rise up the column, gradually cooling. When cooled below their boiling point, they condense back to liquid and are run off.
  • Hydrocarbons with high boiling points condense first. The lower their boiling
