crime

Functionalism

Durkhiem

beleive crime can be a good thing as it follows = too much crime could represent too many rules a perhaps dicatorship

too little crime shows not many rules are in place to control society

1)Boundary Maitanance = Reinforces social solidarity , reinforces norms and values in society

2)Social solidaity = brings people together forms moral panics - critixised by labbelling theory as creates dicrimnations ,marginalisation -terrorsit attacts

3) adaptation and change - can change laws/views like nelson mandella

socialisation -how children are taught norms and values -lone parent, non nuclear familes may not teach correctly leading to future crime - dont learn gender roles

diversity = different cultures may have differnet norms/values  -influence different actions in society

Merton - strain theory

Deviance is caused due to structural and cultural factors - Merton says that people are faced with what our culture wants us to achieve and what our instituations allow us to achieve legitimately

For example the American dream This was a consensus in america in what social goals people should strive for in success and wealth .people were socialised into beleiveing that it that it could be achieved if you worked hard and that society was metocratic (less on how to achieve it)

however, individuals made various adaptations to strain some leading to crime either accepting or rejections means or goals
