What's that fluttering in a breeze?

Verb to describe the movement of the flag, the power gradually increases as the poem goes on making it seem sinister and powerful. 'A' is used to show that the flag could be anywhere, as this happens all over the world.

It's just a piece of cloth

Repetition to remind us that the flag has done nothing to deserve our respect and that essentially it is just a piece of cloth.

That brings a nation to it's knees.

Shows the respect we have for flags while showing how patriotism and the behaviour can destroy a whole country and make it fall.

What's that unfurling from a pole?

Unfurling shows the gradual increase in power, as if as the questioner starts to want a flag the flag is thriving off it, gaining more and more power.

It's just a piece of cloth

That makes the guts of men grow bold.

'Guts' could represent the bravery of the soldiers who have respected the flag and
