/how attitudes in the uk have changed to the roles of men and women/

~ 1990 - women could own property but as soon as they married it passed to the husband. Only 15% of women worked.

~ 1918 - women got the vote.

~ equal pay act of 1970 and the sex discrimination act of 1975 gave women full rights.

/why attitudes have changed/

~ during the war, women had to take on the roles that men usually did and showed that they could do them just as well. More women needed to work to afford things at home.

~ the suffragettes campaigned for the vote and showed that women no longer wanted to be treated badly.

/Catholic attitudes to the roles of men and women/

~ they believe men and women should have equal roles and rights in society. But they do not think that this is the case in the church and in leadership. They point to the fact that Jesus personally nominated Peter to be the lead of the church and so they believe that only men can be priests.

~ men and women were created on the same day(Genesis) and in gods image so they should be equal.

~ however, Jesus' closest apostles/followers were all men and priests follow on from them so they should all be men too.

/traditional Protestant attitudes on the roles of men and women/

~ evangelicals see men and women as having different roles so therefore they can't be equal in religion. Women are supposed to bring up children and men are supposed to provide for their family. They believe only men can be church leaders.

~ men made women(Genesis) so they believe men have more rights.

/modern protestant attitudes on the roles of men and women/

~ men and women are fully equal in their church and they now have female ministers and priests.

~ Jesus treated women as his equal so they should too, eg. the Samaritan woman in John.4.

~ St. Paul said that men and women are equal in the eyes of God.

/traditional Muslim attitudes on the roles of men and women/

~ men and women are seen as having different roles in religion and daily life. So they believe they should have different rights.

~ the Qur'an states that men support women as they are stronger.

~ the Qur'an states that women were designed to give birth.

~ traditionally, only men have ever become imams.

~ women inherit 1/2 of what men do as the pressure is on the men to provide for their families.

/modern Muslim attitudes on the roles of men and women/

~ they believe that men and women are completely equal in religion and education.

~ the Qur'an teaches that men and women are equal.

~ Muhammad allowed wombs into the mosque to worship.

~ early Islam had female religious leaders.

~ Muslim women want the rights that women have in other parts of the world.
