1580'S - eng try to challenge Spain's dominance in the New World.

Early 1580's Eng has claimed some territory but no colonies established, Drake had claimed New Albion during Circumnavigation. 

1583 - Sir Humphrey Gilbert sets out to establish colony in Newfoundland but fails. He dies on the return journey. 

E gives Walter Raleign permission to explore and colonise unclaimed territory. A colony would challenge Spain's dominance in the Americas, hoped to undermine their influence. Could be used as a base for attacking S.Ships. Hoped it would also provide trade and raw materials. Would be a model for future ventures, gave Native Americans chance to not be under spanish rule.
