Cells

?

A cell is the smallest unit of matter that can live independently and reproduce itself.

Cells exist in all shapes and sizes (elongated, square, star-shaped and round) and have many different functions.

A group of cells form tissue, the study of the structure and form of cells and tissues is called histology.

These are examples of what a red blood cell looks like. They are flat and disc-shaped so they can move through the bloodstream quickly.

These cells are found in the bladder and the lymphatic system. They provide stretch and movement.

These are examples of what a skin cell looks like. They are layered and there are no gaps to provide protection.

These cells are found in your nervous system. They link like a chain to provide a quick electric response.

CELL ORGANELLES

Cell membrane: its a fine membrane that encloses the cell and protects it's contents. This membrane is semi-permeable in that it selectively controls the inward and outward movement of molecules into and out of the cell. Oxygen, nutrients, hormones and proteins are taken into the cell, as needed, and cellular waste such as carbon dioxide passes through the membrane.

Cytoplasm: the cytoplasm is the gel like substance that is enclosed by the cell membrane. It contains nutrients that are required to help cell growth and reproduction. The cytoplasm contains…
